Whether you’re just starting your fitness journey or are settled into your regimen, no routine is complete without considering how to have a deep and restful recovery.
Exercise and recovery are the yin and yang of good health. Striking a balancing act between them is the key to improve your health and fitness without risking pain or injury.
CBD can be a great companion to your recovery periods. In this article, we’ll walk you through the many ways CBD can be used to help you rest, recover, and build a ritual around your exercise or practice.
Wait…Can Competitive Athletes Use CBD?
World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) regularly releases a list of prohibited substances. The most recent report was just released in January 2020. WADA is legit – they’re the ones that the Olympics and over 600 sports organizations follow for anti-doping suggestions.
In regard to cannabinoids, the report says, “All natural and synthetic cannabinoids are prohibited, including: in cannabis (hashish, marijuana) and cannabis products, Natural and synthetic tetrahydrocannabinols (THCs), Synthetic cannabinoids that mimic the effects of THC.”
Notably – Cannabidiol (CBD) is the one exception.
Regardless – it’s important that you double-check and follow the rules and regulations of your specific team, competition, or other entity.
If CBD is allowed but you’re wary of trace amounts of THC or other cannabinoids, you can always use CBD isolate. CBD isolate is pure CBD and gives you a worry-free way of taking advantage of CBD’s benefits.
Take Your Workouts to the Next Level with CBD
CBD is a natural compound found in cannabis plants and shows promise in many areas of health.
Because CBD is a cannabinoid – it interacts with your endocannabinoid systems. This bodily system is involved with regulating important functions like sleep, focus, muscle management, and more. CBD can also serve as an anchor to your pre- or post-workout ritual.
Better Muscle Recovery Through Sleep
Other than the joy of getting cozy in the covers, sleep does wonders for your muscles. While you’re resting, your body is hard at work regenerating and repairing damaged muscle fibers.
Your muscles become healed and restored when you’re having a good night’s sleep. Lack of quality sleep can cause loss of muscle mass and can slow muscle recovery.
If you have trouble getting a good night’s sleep – CBD can help. CBD has been shown to have the potential to help you fall asleep faster, rest more deeply, and keep you asleep through the night. Best of all, unlike other sleep supplements – CBD doesn’t have a risk of dependency.
CBD + Sleep = Better Sleep. Better sleep = better muscle repair = a stronger you.
Can you dig it?
Manage Pain & Inflammation
When you challenge your body in new or more intense ways, you’re likely to experience some muscle soreness.
Muscle soreness after a workout is called “DOMS”, short for ‘delayed onset muscle soreness’. DOMS is usually caused by micro-tears in your muscles. These mini-tears are totally normal and a natural part of your body becoming better able to handle rigorous training (aka – you get stronger).
These micro-tears can cause some mild pain and inflammation. To give your body a head start on recovery, try using CBD.
A study from the European Journal of Pain showed that CBD applied on the skin has the potential to help lower pain and inflammation due to arthritis.
CBD topicals can be massaged in as targeted muscle relief. CBD tinctures can also be used as a general way to lower pain and inflammation.
Improve Your Focus
If you’re most people – odds are you’re hitting the gym before or after a full day of work. Groggy mornings or sluggish evenings can be a terrible time for focus.
CBD is a natural nootropic. It’s been shown to help regulate your mood and can have a positive effect on your stress and anxiety. Managing these distractions can help you feel centered and focused on your workout.
Build a Meaningful Ritual
Rituals are a way to inject mental purpose, extra power, or positive influence into your performance. Some rituals come about naturally (I ate a chocolate chip granola bar before I won my last race), while others can be deliberate (I quietly set an intention before practice).
If you don’t have one or are looking to expand yours – consider trying CBD with visualization meditation.
Visualization in sports can help train your brain to see and expect successful outcomes. Even Michael Phelps’ coach Bob Bowman used visualization techniques to help get Phelps into the zone and focused on the win.
To start your visualization, take a dose of a CBD tincture or rub a soothing CBD salve into some key muscles to create a calm and focused environment. Then, visualize your desired outcome in as much detail as you can muster.
Voila! You’ve created a ritual that’ll help you manifest your goals.
Overall, CBD can help you meet your fitness goals in a variety of ways. Although some organizations might not approve of CBD, CBD is widely accepted in the sporting community, including by the agency that regulates the Olympics.
CBD has a wide range of potential health benefits, many of which can benefit athletes in particular. Whether it’s improved sleep, managing muscle soreness, or honing your focus – CBD can help.
CBD can also help anchor you to a ritual of your choosing. We’d recommend visualization meditation since it’s a great way to set a positive intention while in a calm and relaxed environment.
